1599 Geneva Bible: "But It's for the Common Good!"

Luke 19:8 (i)And Zacchaeus stood forth, and said unto the Lord, Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor: and if I have taken from any man by (ii)forged cavillation, I restore him fourfold.

i. The example of true repentance, is shown by the effect in one's life.
ii. By falsely accusing any man: and this agrees most fitly to the Tax masters: for commonly they have this trade among themselves that when they rob and spoil the commonwealth, they have nothing on their lips, but that it is for the profit of the commonwealth, and under that guise they play the thieves, and if men rebuke them and go about to point out their robbery, and their spoiling, the tax men but cry out that the commonwealth is hindered.
